Fire Completely Destroys Orange City Barn

ORANGE CITY, IA -

A barn on a farm near Orange City is a total loss after a fire early Monday afternoon.

The call for that fire came in at around 1:30 Monday afternoon, and more than six hours later there where still hot spots in what was left of the building.

When fire crews responded to a report of a barn fire Monday afternoon the entire building was already completely engulfed in flames.

Crews from Orange City, Alton and Sioux Center worked to save the barn, located at 3576 440th Street, but the barn was totally lost.

Elmer and Audrey Gesink own the barn.

It's not known what started the blaze, but they think an electrical short could be to blame.

There was a lot of hay inside, which they believe is why the barn burnt so quickly.

Two grain wagons were lost in the blaze, the Gesinks don't think they'll rebuild their barn, they're just glad no one was hurt.

The family says that one of the worst things about the whole situation is that over the past five years they had completely fixed up the entire building.
