Beating the Odds: Casinos Fight H1N1

Posted:

(SIOUX CITY, IA) Casinos aren't taking any chances when it comes to protecting customers from H1N1. Whether you're hitting the slots at the boat or on the strip, casinos are beating the odds when it comes to keeping you safe.

At the Whistlestop Casino in North Sioux City, keeping customers clean is a top priority.

"Started with the machines then we added in some hand sanitizers around different areas of the building," says Denny Mills, Whistlestop Casino GM.

The casino purchased four hand sanitizer dispensers and wipe down video gaming machines with a potent alcohol-based disinfectant.

"We have people in and out at all times and we have no idea where they've been or what they might have," says Mills.

Housekeepers at Argosy Casino in Sioux City now wipe down machines with a stronger solution.

"We make sure we wear our gloves, we disinfect the machines three times a day. We clean our bathrooms, use a lot of Lysol during the season," says Sue Hansen, Argosy Casino housekeeper.

Employees can use one of dozens of hand sanitizer machines regularly to keep germs from spreading in close quarters.

"It's the touching of the machines, the touching each other, the shaking hands," says Kees Eder, Argosy Casino VP & GM.

"We have a lot of traffic going in and out of the boat and a lot of times we have to take extra precautions," says Hansen.

The casino is also offering cheaper flu shots for employees.

"It's something that we keep in front of them, top of mind, that this is an important issue for all of us," says Eder.

Siouxland casinos aren't willing to gamble on keeping people healthy.

Whistestop Casino employs only a handful of people while Argosy has 360 employees. But both general managers say sick policies are in place if workers come down with H1N1.
