Rising Oil Prices Limit Summer Travel

Posted:

The prices keep climbing both at the pump and the airport. American Airlines will now charge $15 to check luggage blaming the move on rising oil prices. And many other carriers are charging $25 for a second bag now.

"Yeah I think it's a trend that will continue," said travel agent Chriss Camenzend with Premier Travel & Cruise.

It seems rising oil prices are putting the brakes on travel plans for many this summer.

"They're pretty high so we're gonna stay closer to home, use less gas and just have more fun around here."

"I have a kid that has to be paid for on an airline now and with me and my husband, it would be $1800 just to get to Washington."

"The gas prices didn't affect us too much, however if they continue to go up, like everybody else we'll stay at home."

Agents at Premier travel have not noticed a drop in business yet.

"But it will be interesting to see down the road what the long term effects of the higher oil prices will be," said Camenzend. "Because it will have to result in higher airfares for sure."

She expects oil prices to affect the road trips as well.

"If you choose to do something like the black hills or something like you're driving to a lake resort, you know there may be some people who are forced to curtail plans because it's gotten just out of their price range," said Camenzend. "It's not a good situation."
