Alternative, renewable energy is one solution to the energy crisis, and construction is beginning on a new wind farm near Bloomfield, Nebraska. When complete, it will generate enough electricity to power about 25,000 homes. And both local and state officials are excited about the venture.
27 turbines will generate energy on the Elkhorn Ridge Wind Farm, located about five miles north of Bloomfield. Governor Dave Heineman attended Tuesday's formal groundbreaking, for the $140 million project.
It will create 100 construction jobs and six permanent positions. The Nebraska Public Power district has already agreed to buy power from the 80 megawatt wind farm. It will more than double the amount of wind energy in its system.
"It's very very critical for America, we need to become more energy independent and more energy secure and this is a small step forward," says Governor Dave Heineman.
Project leaders plan to have the entire facility operating by December.
